Wage Impacts of Schooling Mismatches: Evidence From A Matched Employer- Employee Panel
نویسنده
چکیده
I address the spread and wage implications of schooling mismatches, given the possible lack of synchronisation in the education system-labour market relationship. My main contribution is in studying the role of unobserved heterogeneity in the overand under-education phenomena, by drawing on a matched employer-employee panel. I find that the identification of the key parameters is made difficult due to the lack of variability in the regressors. Moreover, I detect strong evidence of selectivity in the transitions experienced by workers, which is likely to seriously bias the results. Finally, some evidence supporting a “stepping-stone” interpretation of schooling mismatches is presented. JEL codes: C23, I21, J24, J31.

Wage Determination under Plan and Early Transition: Bulgarian Evidence using Matched Employer-Employee Data. by Derek C. Jones* and Kosali Ilayperuma Simon** September 2004 Abstract By using a large panel containing matching employer-employee information, noncompetitive forces are found to dominate wage determination during planning. During early transition the process becomes much more market ...
متن کاملSKILL-BIASED TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGE, INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND THE WAGE STRUCTURE New evidence on the determinants of the employment structure from linked employer-employee panel data for Germany
During the last two decades, the labour demand structure in Germany and other OECD countries has experienced a decrease in the demand for low skilled and a rise in the demand for highly skilled employees. The adoption of modern technologies in the production process as well as the growth of international trade are often regarded as the main driving factors behind this change. On the other hand,...
متن کاملUnderstanding the NativeImmigrant Wage Gap Using Matched EmployerEmployee Data. Evidence from Germany
Hellerstein and Neumark (1999) developed a straightforward method to detect wage discrimination using matched employer-employee data. In this paper a new method to measure wage discrimination is proposed, that builds on the ideas first developed by Hellerstein and Neumark. It has four main advantages: it is robust to labor market segregation, it does not impose linearity on the wage setting equ...
متن کاملIntra-firm wage inequality and firm performance – First evidence from German linked employer-employee-data
Economic theory suggests both positive and negative relationships between intrafirm wage inequality and productivity. This paper contributes to the growing empirical literature on this subject. We combine German employer-employee-data for the years 1995-2005 with inequality measures using the whole wage distribution of a firm and rely on dynamic panel-data estimators to control for unobserved h...
متن کاملGender Wage Gaps Reconsidered: A Structural Approach Using Matched Employer-Employee Data
In this paper I propose and estimate an equilibrium search model using matched employer-employee data to study the extent to which wage di¤erentials between men and women can be explained by differences in productivity, disparities in friction patterns or wage discrimination. The availability of matched employer-employee data is essential to empirically disentangle di¤erences in workers product...
